D.C.: A Girl’s Guide to Getting Fit (For Free)

yoga

When I first moved to DC after college, I was eager to burn off those last college pounds and so I did what any desperate woman in my situation would do: I joined the closest gym. However, life got in the way (as it often does) and happy hours got scheduled and trips got planned, so my jaunts to the gym became few and far between. Regardless, at the first of the month (every month), my bank account’s balance was always $60 less.

A few months ago, I decided it was time to do the unthinkable: cancel my gym membership. It made sense as I was rarely (if ever) going and thus was essentially wasting my money. The days of “I may go after work” or “I will go on Saturday morning after I watch the news” were over… and I faced the harsh reality: I was not a gym rat and I would never be.

Upon this cancellation, I decided I still had to be active and, as someone that loathes running, I had to find some other options. So, I searched for free exercise opportunities in the DC area, which I will share with you now:

1. Lululemon- The Georgetown location offers free yoga classes every Sunday at noon. Word to the wise: bring your own mat and get there around 11:45 am, as the room fills up before noon. Also, the Lululemon in Logan Circle holds a free yoga class every Wednesday at 6 pm in a park near Dupont Circle. Again, be sure to b.y.o.m. (bring your own mat) and get there early to secure a prime spot.

2. Dance Place- This dance studio on on 8th street (NE) offers free beginner dance classes on Saturdays at 8:30 am. Can you think of a better way to kick off your Saturday than to attend a free dance class and learn some moves from the professionals? I doubt it.

3. Washington Sports Club- At all locations in the DC area, you can visit the club one time for free with someone who is already a member. The gyms offer classes such a spinning, total body conditioning, and pilates… so take your pick!

4. Sometimes, a simple google search will help you locate promo codes which will allow you to take free fitness classes in the DC area. Lava Barre in Arlington and Biker Barre in DC have both offered a free (first) class in the past, using a promo code found online. Just google and you will find some hidden steals… trust me!

So, am I missing out on any free exercise experiences that I should check out? Do tell…
