Kennebunkport: Vacation like a President

SweetLemonMag-KennebunkportVacationLikeaPresident:Beach

Kennebunkport, Maine is most famous as the summer residence for former President George H.W. Bush and his family – and for good reason. Warm sunny days and cool summer nights make this destination a favorite for two of America’s former Commanders-in-Chief and a must-see for anyone who loves good food, great scenery and all things nautical.

Where to Stay

One of Kennebunkport’s many historical landmarks, The Colony Hotel, boasts some of the best accommodations in town. Built in 1914, the hotel features antique furniture, old-fashioned floral wallpaper and breathtaking views of Kennebunk Beach and the Atlantic Ocean. The Colony Hotel will definitely take you back in time – there are no guest room TVs and there is no air conditioning, so many guests gather on the verandas or parlors to play games, read or relax. Other perks include a delicious complimentary breakfast buffet, private beach access and poolside drink and lunch service!

What to Eat

Lobster, of course! Local restaurants offer traditional fare like steamed lobster, lobster bisque and lobster rolls, along with fantastic, trendy lobster creations like lobster grilled cheese, ravioli and tacos. Try The Clam Shack for “America’s Best Lobster Roll,” Mabel’s Lobster Claw for more traditional seafood dishes and The White Barn Inn for a more elegant dining experience.

Made in Maine

No trip to Maine would be complete without a shopping excursion. In addition to Kennebunkport’s many shops and boutiques, the Pine Tree State is home to L.L. Bean – the headquarters for preppy-but-practical outdoor attire and the inspiration for . It’s also the birthplace of Stonewall Kitchen, creators of gourmet food products who also host cooking classes at their company store. Both locations are a short drive from Kennebunkport, as are various discount shopping outlets in Kittery and Freeport.

Amazing food, beautiful landscapes, prime shopping destinations and much more make Kennebunkport one of my favorite places – what are you waiting for?
