Actor and musician Cory Monteith was found dead in his Vancouver hotel room Saturday. He was 31 years old.
While speculation about drug use swirls, Vancouver police said that the cause of death was not immediately apparent, but that foul play can be ruled out. Medical examiners will conduct an autopsy on Monday, but sites like Gawker are reporting that Monteith died of an apparent drug overdose. According to E! News, Vancouver PD reported that a video showed Monteith returning to his hotel room by himself in early morning hours and that fob key information correlates that he was most likely alone when he died.
Monteith had a history of addiction, one he was open and candid about with media in a 2011 interview with Parade, and most recently the Glee star voluntarily checked himself into rehab in March of this year.
Monteith was a rising star in young Hollywood. Aside from playing McKinley High heartthrob Finn Hudson on FOX’s hit series Glee, he used his musical talents playing drums for his band, . Off-screen, Monteith was dating fellow Glee star Lea Michele. Several friends, co-stars, and members of young Hollywood have taken to Twitter to express their sadness at the news. Mark Salling, who plays Monteith’s on-screen best friend Puck on Glee, simply tweeted “no,” a sentiment surely felt by many family, friends, and fans upon hearing the news.
