Charlottesville is an unfairly kept secret. It’s not a hotbed for tourists exactly, but those who visit, tend to love it – and come back. It’s been spotlighted in a number of major publications and has been named one of the top places to live in America. While Charlottesville may not be for the family planning a weeklong vacation, it’s the perfect stop for a couple in need of a quick getaway or for a girls’ weekend away! Here’s why:

1. History

Charlottesville is rich in history. A Donald Trump kind of rich. It is home to Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe and is significant in the history of the American Revolutionary War. The city is also an easy drive from Washington D.C., as well as Colonial Williamsburg and a number of Civil War sites. Spend a day or two touring the historical sites in and around Charlottesville, and then drive to our nation’s capital or Jamestown. See my recommended Charlottesville historical sites here.

2. Wineries and Breweries

In recent years, Charlottesville and the surrounding area has become home to a number of wineries and breweries, setting up the perfect environment for a weekend of wine and beer tasting. King Family Vineyard not only offers up wine tastings, but they also have polo matches every Sunday from Memorial Day weekend through mid-October. Pippin Hill Farm doubles as one of the Top 50 Romantic Wedding Venues in the country, and in addition to their selection of wines, they also offer vineyard-to-table dining.

For those of you who prefer beer over wine, hit the Brew Ridge Trail – a trail of breweries winding through Charlottesville and the surrounding area. Tour stops include Blue Mountain BreweryDevils Backbone Brewing Company, Blue Mountain Barrel House, Starr Hill and South Street, among others. Hint: while at Starr Hill, I recommend trying The Love or Northern Lights!

3. University of Virginia

The University of Virginia is one of the most well-known destinations in Charlottesville. One of the top public universities in the country, UVA attracts some of the best and brightest students and professors from around the world. Founded by Thomas Jefferson, it’s also a historical destination with Jefferson’s architecture showcased throughout the grounds. Oh, and UVA football fans know how to tailgate!

4. The Food

Charlottesville prides itself on eating fresh and local, and that’s reflected on the menus of many local restaurants. Traveling with guys? Head to Beer Run, which is exactly what the name implies – beer on tap and a menu that focuses on local, organic and all natural ingredients. Craving a burger? Try Citizen Burger Bar. Looking for something a little more upscale for a date night? Maya or C&O will fit the bill. If you’re a foodie – or just like to eat! – Charlottesville is your town.

5. The People

And, of course, I saved the best reason for visiting Charlottesville for last. The people here are truly one of a kind. The city brims with southern hospitality, and it’s hard to meet a someone who acts like a stranger. Whether you’re lost and looking for directions, seeking food or shopping recommendations or merely want to strike up a conversation with a passerby, Charlottesvillians are up for the challenge. You’re sure to leave with a new friend – and a reason to visit again!
