Stand up straight. Use this fork. RSVP in a timely manner. One of my favorite coffee table books is by Judith Martin. It’s funny, clever, and the go-to guide for all things proper (see www.missmanners.com for more). Of course, of the many topics she covers, the art of a “Thank You Note” is explored. This happens to one of my most favorite things to do and never forget.
According to Miss Manners, a simple thank you-note formula should entail:
- An expression of delight.
- Mention of the particular present and why it caused this delight.
- Kind words about the giver along with the expression of thanks.
There is something to be said about a hand-written “thank you” in the day and age of email, Facebook, texting and Twitter (don’t get me wrong, social media is still one of my favorite forms of communication). However, it is not only polite to send and to show appreciation, but I also feel it’s a dying art outside of weddings and bridal showers.
Whether for a gift, a dinner or simply a “thank you for helping me with…”, sitting down, writing a thoughtful note and paying that .45 cents? (hello Forever stamps!) should be more often on the top of all our to-do lists.
