December is synonymous with a lot of things: the first day of winter (the 21st, mark your calendars!), baking cookies, wrapping presents, Christmas and my personal fave, sweater weather! They’re cozy, cuddly and can be slipped over any ensemble at a moment’s notice. Not to mention that they’ll get you in the holly jolly spirit of the holiday season in no time. With so many knitwear options to choose from, you’ll be in good company no matter which one you bring home.
- Ugly Christmas Sweater-Sometimes I think “ugly” Christmas sweaters get a worse rep than they deserve. In the midst of a few really, really hideous and downright tacky holiday sweaters, I like to believe that there are some gems out there. Instead of those hand-me downs from granny (e.g. red sweater vests adorned with gaudy reindeer and snowmen patches – ugh!), a simple candy cane, shining star or even a festive catch phrase is a much better way to go, in my opinion at least! Not reserved just for your annual tacky Christmas sweater party, wear one with a sequined skirt and these can carry you through the New Year!
- Fair Isle- Nothing heralds the start of winter like a traditional Fair Isle sweater. Picture yourself skiing the Alps or skating figure 8’s at Rockefeller Plaza in your favorite Fair Isle – cute, right? Keep it classy with a corduroy skirt, tights and loafers or update the look with the season’s boldest colored jeans.
- Cable Knit- If patterns and prints leave you feeling apprehensive, then an all-around classic cable knit sweater is your best bet. Forget being fashion-forward, the cable knit is a wardrobe staple that’s not going anywhere (like ever!). For an uber preppy look, pair it with jeans, equestrian boots and a quilted jacket.
- Bedazzled- December is THE month for all things sparkly, shimmery and gold. It’s your time to shine so don’t hold back with the sparkle factor. Whether it’s a full-on sequined sweater or the simple accoutrement of an embellished collar, a little glimmer goes a long way!
- Quirky- It may be chilly, but that doesn’t mean you have to lose your sense of style or humor. A great conversation piece, quirky sweaters not only uplift your spirits, but also those around you. Whether it’s a bow-tastic colorblock sweater or a whimsical, zig-zag wool jumper, these sweaters are meant to turn your frown upside down!
