As we make our way further into Fall, the need for a warm coat makes itself more apparent. A great coat will not only polish off an outfit to have you looking chic from day to night, but will also keep you feeling cozy amidst the chilly Fall weather. This season’s coats may make you want to spend more time outside just to show off your new topper!  So whether you are on a mission to update your outerwear, or you just want to see what’s new this season, we have the top trends from the runway at price points that may work for your budget.

The Oversized Menswear-Inspired Coat

Coats 2

This coat was all over the Fall 2013 runways in both single and double-breasted styles. A few of the many collections to feature this topper include Milly, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Stella McCartney, Max Mara, and Michael Kors. The oversized coat was shown in all different colors and fabrics ranging from classic neutral shades, to incorporating the season’s other major trends such as classic menswear fabrics as well as pastel hues, winter white, teal, and deep navy.

This coat silhouette can be intimidating at first, however, once you see how versatile this style can be you won’t be able to resist adding it to your closet. Not only can you wear this coat with your casual skinny jeans, but it also transitions well into evening. Wear an oversized topper over a cocktail dress or with a fancy trouser for a chic and sophisticated look that will take you right into the holiday season.

The Leopard Print Coat

Coats 3

Leopard is the animal print of the season, making a statement at the DKNY, Kate Spade, Thakoon, Diane von Furstenberg, and the Burberry Prorsum shows. Though it is a powerful print, it will also work as a neutral in your wardrobe, providing you with a very versatile piece. Pair your printed coat with a punchy colored bottom in a strong red, cobalt blue, or emerald green to make it really pop, or keep it classic with a black trouser. We love this street style look!

The Classic Menswear Fabric Coat

Coats 4

The use of classic menswear fabrics, including plaid, houndstooth, herringbone, and pinstripes, are seen on the runways in clothing and accessories. However, the strongest use of these fabrics are in outerwear. Alberta Ferretti, Dolce & Gabbana, Paul & Joe, Tommy Hilfiger, and Karen Walker are just a few of the many collections to incorporate these fabrics into their coat designs. A coat in a classic menswear fabric is a timeless piece that you will have for years to come.

The Pastel Coat

Coats 5

If you are looking for an unexpected trend in coats this season, then perhaps the pastel coat is the one for you. Though we all love the traditional jewel tones associated with Fall, the pastel and candy colored coats shown this season are a refreshing change to the typical Autumnal palette. Acne, Céline, Carven, Gucci, Sonia Rykiel, and Mulberry have all shown coats in the soft, happy hues. Though the pastel colored coats were shown in a variety of silhouettes, they all evoked a sense of femininity and whimsy.

The Moto Coat

Coats 6

The updated moto jacket is a top trend this Fall, but as the temperature drops you can swap out the jacket for a moto coat. The moto coat is the perfect way to achieve an edgy look, while still keeping warm. Rag & Bone, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and Rebecca Taylor were a few of the collections to show this coat style on the runway. Check out the American Eagle and Chicwish coats below for the designer look at an amazing price!
