Fall Layering Essential: The Button Down

It’s sweater weather – or more appropriately, it’s button-down weather!  While the weather seems to be playing tricks on us these days (one day it feels like Fall is in full swing, the next it’s like Summer is back), chillier temperatures are in sight.  I don’t know how this is even possible, but my collection of button-down shirts is surprisingly sparse (for lack of a better term).  A week’s worth of button-downs is completely necessary as you’ll need one that’s casual and cool, one that’s a little more feminine, and one that’s borrowed from the boys.

Not sure where to get started?  Here are five styles of button-downs to invest in this season.

Button-Down Shirts

Classic Button-Down Shirt in Gingham (J.Crew Factory) - Oh gingham, I’m finally catching onto your perfectly square, little geometric white and blue (or pink, my favorite!) check pattern.  This season, I’m most coveting a gingham button-down to tuck into jeans or a scallop-trim wool skirt.

Banff Shirt (Aritzia) - Confession:  embarrassingly enough, I didn’t always know what buffalo check was.  This bold, red and black check pattern evokes a woodsy, lumberjack feel.  Though not my forte, I think that buffalo check certainly has its place in the spectrum of button-downs.  Let me know how you style yours!

Penfield Haverhill Flannel Shirt (Madewell) - Plaid is preppy and flannel is oh-so-cozy.  Odds are you own a fair share of plaid shirts and are already a pro at styling them.  Once I invest in one or two, I can’t wait to pair them with a cardigan and riding boots (…or maybe loafers).

Holecroft Shirt (Jack Wills) - Chambray shirts are the epitome of cool.  There’s no styling needed – you could literally throw one of these button-downs on and walk right out the door.  They’re that effortless and easy to style.  If you’re like me, however, and erroneously fail at “effortless attempts,” then it would look equally exquisite layered under one of your chunky knits or styled with a pretty bedazzled necklace.

Audrey Peacoat Linear Division Stripe Print Shirt (Equipment) - Because black and white stripes are always chic, a minimalist button-down with vertical stripes will serve you well.  Pair it with black leather shorts or keep it classic with black skinny jeans and ballet flats.
