Smithsonian Special

It’s that time of year again, when the nation’s capital is sprinkled with its’ famous pink and white darling flowers, cherry blossoms. People travel from all corners of the world to come see the captivating buds spring to life amongst the historic monuments and around the Tidal Basin. Last week I took full advantage of a midweek day off and did some cherry blossom gazing. The trees were stunning and sitting in the grass on the National Mall underneath them, book in hand, was nothing short of bliss. There was only one issue; the 91 degree heat. Needing some relief, I wandered across the street into one of my favorite places in the city, the Museum of Natural History, and I discovered something absolutely wonderful inside.

Located on the first floor, is an area dedicated to special exhibits. The museum selects features to proudly display unique artifacts throughout different times of the year. Right now, the special exhibit is about orchids. How amaze?! Orchids are a personal favorite of mine but their beauty is universal. Although the exhibit is small, every inch is bursting with different species of the gorgeous flowers. Orchids come in more brilliant colors than the average Lilly Pulitzer sundress but they also have some impressive qualities. Did you know that vanilla comes from an orchid? The fermented seed comes from a type called Vanilla planifolia, an Orchid native to Southern Mexico and Central America – how incredible is that?

The exhibit is open now until Sunday, April 21st.  Instead of watching a Real Housewives marathon this weekend, get out and go see this! It’s the perfect excuse to play tourist for the day and did I mention that it’s free? Treat yourself to a Sabrette hot dog and sun bathing on the mall afterward your little adventure for the perfect weekend afternoon.
