Downton Abbey: The Toast of Television

If you’re like me, you’ve probably imagined yourself on more than one occasion into the world of the Emmy award-winning Downton Abbey.  Maybe you imagine yourself discussing the Downton estate with Lady Grantham over tea, or whipping up a soufflé with Mrs. Patmore – or maybe you’re sitting at the Crawley’s grand table, dining and socializing with the Earl of Grantham and his highly urbane family.  Although you might not actually be able to join the family for an elegant evening – and after you went through all that trouble to dig out your elbow-length gloves, too! – you can still drink like a Crawley.

Many an episode of Downton Abbey has been watched with a glass (or two) of wine, and now, fans can indulge in a collection of wines named for their favorite British drama.

The American cult-like following of the Masterpiece drama is no secret to Wines That Rock, who have teamed up with Knock Out Licensing and Dulong Grands Vins de Bordeaux to create Bordeaux Clarets and Bordeaux Blancs named for this TV fan favorite.  The blends will be modeled after the French imports relished by British aristocracy of the early twentieth century.  The Dulong Grands Vins de Bordeaux vineyards certainly have a pedigree of which even the persnickety Violet would approve.

Bill Zysblat, co-owner of Wines That Rock, explains, “We are working with The Dulong Grands Vins De Bordeaux vineyards, which have been in the same family for five generations. They have over 130 years of experience in creating the world’s best wines so these are wines the Crawley family would have been proud to serve at Downton.”

Wines That Rock has already enjoyed success with wines inspired by rock and roll legends, such as the Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, and the Rolling Stones.  And with its wide North American fan base, the Downton pop culture phenomenon is a logical venture for the winery.

A release date has not yet been announced for the Downton-inspired wines; however the collection will be sold in the United States and Canada.  Buyers will be able to purchase individual bottles as well as packaged gift sets (a perfect present for your favorite Crawley enthusiast!).

The premiere of Season 4 is set to air in the U.S. on Sunday, January 5, 2014 at 9 PM. And now you won’t have to think twice about what you’re serving for drinks at your premiere party.

Cheers to Season 4 paired with a fine French wine – and maybe some luck in love for Lady Edith, while we’re toasting.
