Olivia Wilde fell in love with Haiti in 1987. She continued her love by supporting Crash director Paul Haggis’ charity, but she felt the fundraising method could be replaced. With business partner Barbara Burchfield, she decided to tackle poverty by abandoning the charity model. Thus Conscious Commerce was created.
Conscious Commerce is an initiative to showcase brands and philanthropic efforts around the world. It’s an “experiment in living and shopping.” Currently the site is in beta, but savvy shoppers can check out the Alternative Apparel Message Bag collaboration. Proceeds benefit the Haitian school, Academy for Peace and Justice. Or shop Anthropologie’s New Light Dress supporting poverty alleviation through education and an alternative to the sex trade.
I’d love to see a collaboration between Conscious Commerce and H&M’s Conscious Foundation. What collaboration would you like to see?
