Milwaukee: A Girl’s Guide to Getting Fit on a Budget

Between the massive amounts of money that I dish out every month on rent, car payments, groceries, and student loans, there is not much left to go around. Putting your health and fitness goals on the back burner due to a lack of extra funds is a terrible feeling. Luckily, Milwaukee is full of opportunities to be working on your fitness without breaking the bank.

Planet Fitness probably has the best deal around. I have done some serious shopping around when looking for a gym, and Planet Fitness caters to the budget-conscious consumer. They often run deals for memberships that run from $10-$20 per month. While they don’t have the perks of childcare or juice bars, they DO offer a comfortable and affordable setting to get down to business. The downtown location is also next door to Grand Avenue Mall, so you can work out and do a little shopping with the money you have saved in one trip! #winning

If you need to find your center, Yama Yoga in the Third Ward is the place to go. You can leave the worries of your dwindling bank account behind, since they offer a great introductory special – $10 for a 10-day pass. While you do have to use your sessions in a consecutive 10-day period, they offer a wide variety of classes and times that will fit into your schedule and make that $10 well spent.

Surprisingly,  is a one-stop shop for free fitness (ok, minus the $99 yoga pants). Also located in the Third Ward – conveniently next to Starbucks – they offer a variety of cost-free activities. A weekly running club meets every Monday at 6pm for all skill levels. You have the opportunity to go on a two-six mile run with one of Lulu’s fitness ambassadors and, of course, look super stylish doing so. Additionally, once a month, Lululemon offers a free yoga class on Saturday mornings right in their store!

So Milwaukee’s love for yoga continues, but this is one of the best and most beautiful deals you can come by. The Milwaukee Art Museum offers a Saturday morning yoga practice once a month. While there is a $15 suggested donation, your money is well-spent on the glorious views of Lake Michigan through the glass of the Calatrava. You can enjoy the rest of the museum after your workout or hop onto the Lakeshore State Park trail for a run by lake.

Staying fit does not mean your wallet needs to get skinny too. Milwaukee has a lot to offer to minimize your waistline without minimizing your back account!
