DC: Seven Spots to Hit before Summer is Over

Summer is one of my favorite times of the year; everyone is a little bit happier, and we enjoy the privilege of beautiful weather (well, usually)! I am in denial that it is ending, but continually more office small talk leads to: “Can you believe summer is almost over?” I am determined to soak up every last drop of summer fun that I can in these next few weeks. Before you know it, it will be too cold to leave the house!

Get outside and enjoy the weather at these DC hot spots while you can:

Meridian Hill Park is tucked between Adams Morgan and U Street Corridor, elevated above its surroundings. Find a spot in the shade, bring a blanket, some snacks and a bocce set and enjoy a little bit of nature in the middle of the city.

Dumbarton Oaks is a historic estate located in Georgetown. Stroll over after some shopping or brunch at the Waterfront, and you will find a garden paradise hidden in the bustling city. Walking the grounds provides a nice backdrop to any casual stroll. If you need some peace and quiet, take a book and camp out on one of the benches for the afternoon.

A Nationals Game! Spending an afternoon watching the game screams “summer.” Whether you are bonding with co-workers or friends, there is something quite relaxing about watching a baseball game. If that’s not enough for you, Nationals Park has some of the best ballpark food in the country. Why have your typical box of popcorn and a frank when you could have a Shake Shack and gourmet french fries?

Jazz in the Garden is a great way to unwind after a long week while still relishing in a cultural experience. Jazz and sculptures – your parents will be so proud! Every Friday, the National Gallery of Art’s Sculpture Garden turns into a giant picnic. Grab a pitcher of Sangria or beer and enjoy the music while the sun sets. Bring a blanket, some snacks and your friends and head over to the garden to start you weekend on the right note.

Bar Dupont is located right off of Dupont Circle and is one of my favorite places in the city. Could it be because their bar snacks include wasabi peas? Very possible! It is a chic spot that is normally best left for special occasions, but they have happy hour every day from 4-6 pm (including Saturday!), and their outdoor seating is quite comfortable. You can curl up on one of their couches while enjoying a cocktail and some fabulous people watching.

An afternoon at the Waterfront is a great way to spend your day. Whether you prefer the scene at the Georgetown Waterfront or the more low-key South West Waterfront, there is something for everyone. And who are we kidding? Watching the sunset over the water while enjoying a cold beverage is pretty much the definition of summer.

Monuments at night. Walking along the National Mall always reminds me how much I love this city. The monuments lit up at night look more grand than in the daytime. Plus – there are WAY less tourists. It’s a great place to catch up with a friend or to take a romantic walk after a date. With the breathtaking backdrop that the monuments offer in all their grandeur, there is no way you could not be grateful to be in our Nation’s Capital!
