There are few things that I love more than a good brunch, especially if it includes a mimosa! How could you resist a stack of pancakes, fluffy triangles of french toast, perfectly crisp bacon, or the local yogurt, honey, and granola that just about everywhere seems to be offering these days? I certainly can’t! On a recent trip to Baltimore, I scouted out some of the most acclaimed brunch spots in the area and have to say that they did not disappoint!
A small, quirky spot in Fell’s Point with a blue facade covered in ivy. The tables are hand painted with fun colors and designs, and the floorboards are exposed, wide, rustic beams. The service is amazing! My coffee cup never reached less than half full! The place is famous for it’s Captain Crunch French Toast, which I just had to try. It came out stacked high and topped with fresh fruit. They also have another well-known special called the Sweet Baby Jesus – crab meat and hash brown crowned with egg and a delectable hollandaise. Daily specials are pretty impressive too. On the day that I visited, specials included Fat Elvis pancakes, which are devil’s food with peanut butter and banana – topped with bacon!
A slightly less eclectic spot with plenty of tables outside for brunching al fresco. The menu is wide and varied and includes everything from huevos rancheros to gluten-free pancakes and fried green tomatoes. Their huge Bloody Marys, garnished with celery, as well as a dash of old bay and a shrimp in true Baltimore style, are highly regarded as are their mimosas. I think that my jaw dropped when their famous monkey bread arrived on our table – bits of dough coated in cinnamon and sugar, baked into a ring shape, and topped with more cinnamon and sugar as well as bananas, walnuts, and chocolate!
