Summer might be known for its’ streak of box office blockbuster’s but the movie line up for 2013 is looking pretty fantastic. There’s nothing quite like spending a rainy fall evening discovering something special on the silver screen. Plus, this is the season for Oscar-potential performances to tumble forward. I’ve compiled a list of my predictions for the must-see movies covering every category from chilling horrors to quirky comedies. What are you looking forward to seeing this upcoming fall?
1. The Wolf of Wall Street
Release Date: November 15th
Starring: Leonardo Dicaprio, Matthew McConaughey, and Jonah Hill
Summary: Director Martin Scorsese tells the true story of Jordan Belfort, wealthy stockbroker and playboy through a series of extravagant successes and extreme corruption. Leo and Scorsese have always been a winning combination and this looks like their best effort yet.
2. Don Jon
Release Date: September 27th
Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, and Julianne Moore
Summary: Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut is a punchy comedy about a New Jersey lothario struggling to identify with realistic expectations about relationships and sex based of his perception from watching porn, as he falls for a real-life smoke show.
3. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Release Date: November 22nd
Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Banks, and Liam Hemsworth
Summary: The much anticipated sophomore effort from the action-packed Hunger Games trilogy is by far the biggest blockbluster scheduled to debut this season. Victors Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark find themselves in peril once again upon their arrival back in District 12.
4. Runner Runner
Release Date: October 4th
Starring: Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake
Summary: Struggling to pay for his college finances’, a gifted student resorts to online gambling to pay the bills. But when he finds his luck corrupted by an off-shore billionaire, he decides to hunt him down himself to get what he is due. The trip leads to an opportunity of a life time, plauged with corruption.
5. Carrie
Release Date: October 18th
Starring: Chloë Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore
Summary: We all remember the chilling original, but this remake is sure to spook all over again with excellent casting choices for the troubled Carrie White and her deeply devout, overbearing mother.
6. Gravity
Release Date: October 4th
Starring: Sandra Bullock and George Clooney
Summary: It’s been awhile since an epic space movie graced the screens and this film looks guaranteed to impress. Directed by the incredibly talented, Alfonso Cuarón and starring two of the biggest names in the biz, the pressure is on for success. The movie captures a mission gone awry as an astronaut and crew medical engineer attempt to survive after drifting away from their ship.
7. Anchorman: The Legend Continues
Release Date: December 20th
Starring: Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Christian Applegate, and Steve Carrel
Summary: It’s been nine, long years since we’ve seen the Channel 4 News Team in action and the gang is finally back. This time, Ron Burgundy and crew hit the Big Apple to cover the first 24 hour news production. The list of funny faces joining the crew is almost too big mention but highlights include: Kristen Wiig, Vince Vaughn, and Tina Fey.
