To say Jay Z is just a rapper is an understatement. He is a businessman, a musician, and definitely one of the greatest artists of our time.
His “Picasso Baby: A Performance Art,”directed by Mark Romanek illustrates the relationship between music and art; he created an interactive art piece. His raps themselves are artistic. Rather than rapping generic rhymes about “big booty hoes”, he creates poetic lyrics as he tells a story. If anything, he brings class back to rap.
As he says himself he is bringing the art back together, “for you to see, I’m the modern day Pablo, Picasso baby.”
He also created a news website that covers art, sports, music, fashion and culture. With his “On the Road” documentaries, fans can basically go behind the stage/ on tour with artists. These documentaries are equivalent to short films, again illustrating how music is an art form and can be combined with different mediums of art. The artists that he features on his website are not just rappers, he has artists like Ed Sheeran, Allen Stone and even Porter Robinson featured.
Go ahead and check out the website – you will be lost in the art.
