Mixtape 2: Girl Power (In Honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month)

GIrl Power Mixtape

It’s October and pink is suddenly omnipresent. In department store makeup departments, in restaurants, on football players’ socks or uniforms, pink is all around us. For those of you who may have missed this great Zesty Digest post by Margaret Ward last week, here’s your chance to catch up. It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and everyone is taking part!

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month I wanted to share with you a “Girl Power” playlist to celebrate the strong women who have fought the disease, as well as those who have never had to battle it, but have been there as support to friends or family who have.

This playlist is made up of powerhouse women who have topped the charts over the years, ranging from big names like Whitney Houston and Diana Ross to newer names like Adele and Selena Gomez. No matter the number of years of celebrity, these women have shown courage and strength to make it where they are today.

When I began making this playlist, I wanted to ensure that I included singers who have fought breast cancer, and only one came to mind at that time. Sheryl Crow. After doing some research, however, I found that singers such as Carly Simon, Melissa Etheridge, and Kylie Minogue (all included in the playlist) have also fought and conquered the disease!

A few of my favorites from the playlist are:

Man! I Feel Like A Woman! – Shania Twain
This is such a feel-good song! As if I’m already not, this song makes me so excited to be a woman. Every time I hear it I can’t help but think about the scene in Crossroads when Britney Spears, Zoe Saldana, and Taryn Manning’s characters have borrowed the car from the guy driving them across the country, and they wake him up singing this at the top of their lungs. Needless to say he’s not pleased. My thirteen-year-old heart swooned at this scene all three times I saw it in the movie theater.

If It Makes You Happy – Sheryl Crow
Ok, yes, this song also appeared in a car scene in Crossroads, but that is not the sole reason I included it. Sheryl Crow is likely one of the most known singers to have faced breast cancer and she does a lot to raise awareness. It was important to me when making this playlist that I highlighted those who have actually fought the disease, and Sheryl Crow was one of those. This song is so catchy, and so true. “If it makes you happy, it can’t be that bad.” Preach, Sheryl, Preach.

Stronger – Britney Spears
It’s true, Britney Spears has had her fair share of struggles, but that woman has always come out on top! Who else could shave all of their hair off and call it a comeback? Regardless of some of her crazy, Britney was a huge pop icon from my childhood and it’s good to see she’s still around. Stronger is a great song when you’re looking for some inspiration, and if you tell me you haven’t solo chair-danced to it at least once, well I think you’re lying.

Whether you have fought breast cancer, seen someone close to you fight it, or you’re just proud to be a girl, I hope you will enjoy this playlist! Maybe you can even put in on your iPod and use it to pump you up while participating in a local Race for the Cure or dancing alone in your room while burning these Susan G. Komen candles.

Whatever suits your fancy, pump this playlist loud and on repeat for best results! To learn more about Breast Cancer and to get involved visit here. Save the ta-tas!
