Dallas: Katy Trail and the Ice House

A little over a month ago, I received a job offer. Within two weeks, my downtown Austin apartment was packed up into little boxes and shipped to Dallas. I only recently started exploring my new city, so I thought I’d start with the basics: Katy Trail and Katy Trail Ice House.

SweetLemonMag-KatyTrail

To summarize Katy Trail in one sentence or less, it is the posh-er version of Austin’s Lady Bird Lake [Town Lake] Hike and Bike Trail. I say posh because Katy Trail is paved…unlike the Hike and Bike Trail, which is dirt path-i-ful. I also say posh because Katy Trail has designated pedestrian lanes and biking lanes – a far cry from the days when I got mowed down by bikers on the Town Lake Hike and Bike Trail. Katy Trail is also lit at night, so don’t be too afraid about working out at night (again, the posh-ness). Katy Trail is open every day, 5AM-midnight.

Katy Trail runs from the American Airlines Center in Victory Park all the way up to SMU’s campus. A decent part of the trail runs through the area of Dallas known as “Uptown” (where I reside). Uptown is home to many a bar, restaurant, salon, and store, so there’s plenty of things to do before / after you finish your morning bike / jog / run / walk / crawl up and down Katy Trail. My suggestion? Go for a post-workout funday at Katy Trail Ice House.

Half outside, half inside (slash in-barn), Katy Trail Ice House is my friends and my one-stop-shop for funtivities. DrinksFriday night? Check. Sunday Funday? Yup. Cornhole? Duh. Every football game featuring a team from Texas displayed on the big screen TVs? Obviously.

Katy Trail Ice House has an ample selection of Texas beers and liquors (as well as non-Texas beers and liquors, but I don’t know why you’d drink those if there are Texan options available), as well as quite the list of carb-o-licious treats for those days when you really just need chips and queso…and nachos…and quesadillas…and cheese fries…and a burger.

No judgement. We all have those days.

Katy Trail Ice House is open Monday-Friday 11AM-2AM, and Saturday and Sunday 10AM-2AM.

Have you gone exploring on Katy Trail or been to Katy Trail Ice House yet? Where are your favorite Dallas haunts?
