To Text or Not To Text, That is the Question

Over coffee and low fat muffins seems to be the time when my girlfriends and I spill our relationship details to each other. Who the men in our lives are — and why we just can’t figure them out. Why they do what they do, and the endless possibilities of reasons why, have fueled our conversations and provided us with endless laughs.

If there is one thing that seems to cause the most problems in our relationships, especially in this generation, it’s our smartphones. Now I’m not going to get into social media, but I think texting has become a central part of our relationships and it’s really changing the quality of our relationships. I’ve had friends that show me past texts from their boyfriends and we’ve sat their trying to dig into meanings behind the words, as if we’re reading Shakespeare’s novels. Let’s face it, guys just aren’t into talking on the phone, even some girls don’t like too much chit chat, and in our fast paced lives we all resort to texting to communicate. Texting just isn’t the way to apologize, settle disagreements or make decisions that effect your relationships. Communication is one of the most important things that can make or break a relationship. Despite this, sometimes the things we’d say in text we’d never say in person, and thats where things can get ugly or even weird. It’s important to understand that texts don’t fade away with time. It’s easy for us to re-read into the words and scroll through them reliving the hurt, doubt, or whatever undesirable feeling they may have caused initially.

Things could go so much smoother for both sexes if we change how we approach communicating. Arguments can go on for hours or even days over text, but with a simple phone call or in person conversation things could be so much simpler. Stop the texting war and just call the person. Here are a few types of texts both girls and guys need to avoid and should really reconsider before pressing send.

The “I’m Sorry” text

Really, you’re sorry? Doesn’t sound like it! A genuine apology must always be done in person or on the phone. Value the other person and simply call so that he or she knows you mean it. An apology done the right way can really show how much respect you have for the other person.

The “We need to talk” text

Why cause the dread!? If you need to talk to your significant other just call them and talk, why start with this crazy one line bomb that will guarantee the other person a possible stomach ulcer. Put yourself in the other person’s shoes, this text will only make whatever you want to talk about more complicated.

The “I assumed…” text

Never jump to assumptions. Remember, assuming makes an ass out of you and me. We’ve all done it, but it’s never a good idea. If he or she hasn’t responded to your texts all night don’t assume the worst. It will only make you seem crazy pathetic and drive your significant other nuts because you can’t control your emotions. Be patient.
