There are many occasions to send a thank you note including birthday gifts, graduation gifts, condolence notes, dinner parties, and job interviews. Really you could send a thank you for anything — and why not? If you are gracious then you should show it, because nothing makes the gifter feel more appreciated than receiving a handwritten note in the mail.

· Send thank you notes out as soon as possible, but late is better than never

· Always handwrite a thank you

· Start your thank you by using “Dear”

· Address the person the same way you would introduce them to others. This depends on the relationship you have with them, friendly or formal

· State exactly what you are thankful for and the occasion of which it was given

· Express how you plan to use the gift or why exactly you are so grateful for the gift

· End the note by wishing the person well or with hopes of reconnecting

· Based on your relationship sign your note with the proper closing, for formal relationships I prefer “sincerely” or “best” but for friendly relationships I always use “cheers” or “love”

· While a handwritten thank you is best it is okay to use printed mailing address labels to save time and look less messy
