How to Throw a Sleepy Hollow Themed Party

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow was a book first written by Washington Irving and published in 1820. The story is set in the secluded town of Sleepy Hollow around 1790. It tells of the teacher, Ichabod Crane, and his dealings with a demonic headless horseman. Since the book was published, numerous television and film adaptations have been made.

Currently, Sleepy Hollow is airing as a fantasy drama on the Fox network. Since it premiered, on September 16, it has been met with rave reviews and high ratings. In fact, it was the first television show this fall to be renewed for a second season. So why not join the party and throw your own Sleepy Hollow party?

Invitations

Send out an evite with a description of  your party. Ask your guests to dress up as one of their favorite characters. This can include Ichabod Crane, Katrina Crane, Lt. Abbie Mills, Sheriff Corbin, Jenny Mills, or Captain Irving. Let them know the details, such as the time, location, and menu. Ask them to RSVP, so you know how many you will be serving.

Decor

Consider all the aspects of Sleepy Hollow. During colonial times, pumpkins, squash, and corn were popular vegetables. Considering that the headless horseman has been depicted as having a pumpkin for a head, it may be fun to incorporate pumpkins into your table setting. You can easily hand-write Ichabod Crane’s name on a large pumpkin, and surround it with fall leaves and corn stalks.

In addition, they did not have electricity back then. Black candlestick holders, with candles, will evoke a slightly creepy feeling to the look. In regards to fire safety, you don’t have to light the candles, and you can also use flameless candles instead.

Sample Menu

Foods and beverages commonly served within the colonies were stews, pumpkin dishes, fruits, and apple cider. Below is a menu to help you draw inspiration, with some recipes. Donut holes are included as a dessert because of one of Ichabod’s most famous lines on the Fox TV show: “What’s insane is a ten percent levy on baked goods. You do realize the Revolutionary war began on less than two percent. How is the public not flocking to the streets in outrage? We must do something.” Of course, you can always create the menu you want, or put your own spin on any dish you like.

I desperately want to throw a Sleep Hollow viewing party now! Unfortunately, everyone I know who watches the show lives out of town. Maybe I can convince some of my friends here to do a marathon Sleepy Hollow watch, plus a showing of the Tim Burton movie or the Disney cartoon.
