Get ready to Gatsby

It’s no secret that The Great Gatsby was the majority of high schoolers’ favorite book to read in school. In fact, it may have been the only book from the dreaded summer reading list that many people read all the way through.

With the release of the new big-screen adaptation of one of America’s greatest novels just around the corner, it’s safe to bet that you’re about to be invited to a lot of roaring-twenties themed parties. Have a few friends over for pre-movie cocktails, see the movie, and then get your twenties after party on with these Gatsby Party Essentials.

Jazz Music

A party is not a party without music. Make sure to include plenty of jazz classics on your list, or skip the hard work and get your tunes flowing with our Roaring Twenties playlist.

Drinks

Drinks. Drinks. Drinks. Whiskey, especially. They always say “you always want what you can’t have,” and boy was that true about the twenties. Americans were prohibited from drinking alcohol, but they didn’t let that stop them. They sure knew how to party! Check out this site for a list of ten awesome prohibition cocktails, or use your own favorite. As long as you have a drink in hand, you’ll fit right in.

Gorgeous Clothes

It doesn’t matter if you get them from a thrift store, and they haven’t seen the light of day in almost a century, no Gatsby party is complete without flapper girls. Grab your most flowing, daring (gasp!), flapper dress, add plenty of makeup, and a reckless (but let’s keep it classy, ladies) attitude, then scoot on down to the nearest “speakeasy.”

While all of these are essential to a great roaring twenties party, the most important ingredient is to have fun! Following the end of World War I and preceding The Great Depression, the twenties were a small break from hardships, and a time for prosperity and happiness. Relax, enjoy yourself, and take a near-century step back to what looked like a beautiful time. With visions of Leo dancing in your head, it definitely shouldn’t be too hard.
