DIY: Nail Polish Tray

DIY Nail Polish Tray
I paint my nails religiously and even have an entire board on Pinterest devoted to “”(230 pins and going strong!). With so many vibrant hues to choose from (not to mention crackle/shatter editions and every variety of sparkle you can imagine!), it’s super easy to accumulate nail polish over a short period of time. That leads to my current dilemma: I’ve run out of space. From storing my bottles of polish in an old beauty case to having them scattered across my dresser, desk and every other spare surface in my room, my love for polish has quickly turned into a nightmare…until now.
Thanks to a secondhand wooden silverware tray and some paint samples, my nail polishes have a home.
Regardless of your level of craft-savviness, this DIY project is perfect for you.
Here’s what you’ll need:
  • Wooden silverware tray
  • Paint samples
  • Paper cutter or scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Ruler
First, I purchased this nifty wooden silverware tray from a local thrift shop. Just make sure that the rows are wide enough to fit your bottles of polish.
Next, I picked up some free paint sample swatches from Home Depot and Lowe’s. While I could place my nail polish in the tray and called it a day, there’s no fun in that. I wanted to create a personalized and visually appealing tray. My favorite part of the entire project was selecting which paint samples to bring home. With so many pretty colors to choose from (with names like Hibiscus Pink and Lucky Shamrock), it was hard not to swipe them all!
In terms of cutting the paint samples to fit, I just played it by ear. I began with one paint sample, placed it in the tray and then estimated how much I should cut off. If you mess up, you can always run back to your local paint supply store and get more! Once you figure out the dimensions of your paint chips or strips, all you need to do is glue them down.
The great thing about this project is that there’s no right or wrong way to do it. From the get-go, I knew that I wanted to include a rainbow of paint swatches in my tray. If you tend to gravitate toward pinks and reds or only pastel nail lacquers, then you may want to color coordinate your tray with paint samples to match those colors.
There you have it, a quick, easy and fun do-it-yourself project that will save space and put your favorite polishes on display.
