Say “sayonara!” to the hundreds of people lined along the shore this summer, pick up a paddle, and set sail for adventure! Many people pop their umbrella in the sand, open a cold drink, and soak up the summer from the comfort of their beach towel. While that makes for a relaxing time at the beach, there is certainly a more adventurous option: kayaking.
If you don’t have access to a kayak via friends or family, you can rent one for the day. Prices typically range anywhere from about $35 to $50 per day, depending on the location and company you choose. If you’d rather go with a group, many coastal towns have kayak tours that will lead you to the best spots. In my hometown of Sarasota, Florida, it typically costs anywhere from $50 – $65 for a kayak tour, depending upon the length of the tour. Don’t forget to check Groupon and Living Social for deals!
Before you dip that paddle in the water, make sure you have the kayak essentials: lifejacket, whistle, dry bag (waterproof bag), a hat, sunscreen, and water. Normally, kayak rentals will be accompanied by a lifejacket for safety purposes. Whistles are used to call for help, if you need it, and the dry bag keeps your camera and extra clothes, well, dry! The hat, sunscreen, and water are the most obvious essentials for keeping your body healthy under the summer sun.
Once you’ve gathered the necessary supplies, you’re ready for a day of exploration. My favorite places include the mangrove tunnels and sandbars that dot the Florida coastline. Away from the crowded beaches, you have a much better chance at spotting porpoises, manatees, fish, and birds that normally shy away from human commotion. You can also find the perfect spot to swim or snorkel to view marine life in their natural habitat.
Tips for keeping your kayaking experience blissful:
- Some kayaks are a bit heavy to carry, so bring a friend for extra help and extra fun!
- Calm days with low winds anywhere from 0 to 10 mph make for safe conditions and smooth maneuverability.
- Prepare to work out those arms! Kayaking is that wonderful sort of activity that gets you exercise, but you don’t realize it because you’re having too much fun.
- Don’t forget the sunscreen!
