The Bikini Bridge: The New Thigh Gap

If you thought the thigh gap was bad, wait until you hear this one.  The latest trend in body shaming is the “bikini bridge.”

A  is the space between your bikini bottom and your hipbones when you lie down.  I’m sorry, what?!  How is that even physically possible?  Excuse me, but is your bikini the wrong size?

The problem with the bikini bridge, the thigh gap, and other dangerous thinspo trends is how viral they have become.  The worst part about this particular trend is how it began.  Buzzfeed shares the history.  To summarize, a 4chan user posted a picture of a bikini bridge and asked others to share it by both promoting this look as an attainable goal, as well as denouncing it as an unhealthy depiction of women’s bodies.  This was done by posting to various forums about the perks of having a bridge, as well as spreading  messages through social media accounts.

One problem, however, is that people are unsure whether all these posts are a part of the hoax started by the 4chan user or if people are actually giving into this trend and working towards this body image.

Hoax or not, the body shaming needs to stop.  These unattainable body trends are influencing young girls and women in all the wrong ways.  What should be stressed is being healthy and fit, not just skinny.  Diet and exercise are important, but should be promoted through positive messages of encouragement rather than unattainable body images and negative advertising.

How is it “unattainable” if there are people in photos that actually have a bikini bridges? If people have them, then they are not unattainable for some.

Besides, BB’s have been around for years. 4Chan just brought them to the light of day.

….What the actual F***. This annoys me even more because my body actually does that. And I still have a bit of a belly pooch and I’m pretty thick around the hip/thigh area [don't have a thigh gap], so it’s not like I’m unnaturally skinny or anything. That’s just now my hipbones are.
Are people just TRYING to find the most ridiculous things to trend now? -.-
