Summer’s Here, Enjoy a Pimm’s Cup

PimmsCup-SweetLemonMAg

I’d like to introduce you to the Pimm’s Cup, the magical drink that has been quenching summer thirsts for over 150 years across the pond, yet virtually unheard of/ignored in this country; it’s the perfect summer drink: refreshing, light and utterly customizable.

Pimm’s is best enjoyed out of doors, though no one will begrudge you for staying inside where the AC rules supreme.  Who would blame you if you stayed inside and looked out the window (memories of triple digits and heat domes are not yet faded in my memory) and enjoyed nature while keeping the ice in your glass from melting so rapidly.  Yes, that’s why we stay out of the summer heat – to conserve the ice. #thatsmystory

This drink is perfect for BBQs or reading the latest and greatest novel in your favorite chair. Easily made for just one, or in a jug for a group this cocktail is sure to please. I will pass on a bit of wisdom about this classic British drink – do not, under any circumstances use American Lemonade (seriously, back away from the Crystal Light) – it’s not what they mean. Lemonade is a fizzy lemony concoction the likes of which (according to all the message boards I’ve scoured) cannot be found in this county. Sprite, 7-UP, or club soda all work, but I prefer ginger ale as my mixer of choice … you can find your own favorite mixer and add ins, because as this bartender says, “I haven’t found anything that doesn’t mix well with Pimm’s.” Drink up!

Pimm’s Cup

Ingredients:

1 jigger Pimm’s No. 1
3 jiggers ginger ale (Sprite, 7up, etc)
mint leaves
strawberry
cucumber slices
orange (or lemon) slice

Directions

Fill a glass with ice, add in the fruit and mint leaves (I rubbed mine together to help release the flavor).

Pour Pimm’s No. 1 and ginger ale over the ice and fruit, give it a stir.

Drink up. Salute!
