Who (and) What (to) Wear to the Beach This Year

LeT’s SeT tHe MoOd. With the arrival of spring comes the much anticipated “treat yo’ self” jaunts to the beach, SPF in hand. I for one, chose Miami this year and have the to prove it. If you’re like me and every other wide-eyed girl that I know, the promise of sand in all the wrong places warrants the justification of some much needed online swimwear shopping. What? The old ones I have are so “Cancun with the fam 2013”. After much research I’ve come up with this season’s must-have swimwear trends. But first, a bit of history.

Women’s bodies have long been a poignant source of controversy. In previous eras, women were highly discouraged from showing excessive skin, as that was viewed as a malicious form of temptation for their surrounding male counterparts. It wasn’t until the mid 1800s that women started to take control and celebrate what their mamas gave them with day long beach excursions in their (then) highly controversial “bathing dresses”. Granted the bikini didn’t appear until much later in 1946, thus their predecessors more closely resembled a modern day pair of shorts and a t-shirt (and they were made of wool! Can you say “heavy blanket of itchy hot death”?)

Welp, the good news is feminism is fiercely on the rise and women no longer have to hide in the kitchen, kissing the ground that men walk on. 2014 has been declared “The Year of the Butt”. That being said, I urge you all to celebrate and flaunt it if you got it. Stock up on those booty framing bottoms, my fellow goddesses! Brands like Mikoh, Gypsea, and San Lorenzo Bikinis are all currently killin’ it in the itty bitty bikini business. Gypsy Beach is also a great source for all things booty.

While things down under are seemingly experiencing a peak of confidence, the swim top of choice this season is celebrating a slightly different trend. Remember those summers filled with pasty white sunscreen and the constant struggle between you and your mother over wearing your rash guard at the beach? Break out those much dreaded spandex swim shirts, ladies, because rash guards have made a comeback and they’re looking chicer than ever. Re: Nanette Lepore, Trina Turk, and MILLY.

There you have it folks, everything you need for a vitamin D-packed vacation. Now off you go! And please, let us know in the comments below where you jet off to so that we can live vicariously through your bronzed adventures.
