Marc Jacobs Takes Final Bow at Louis Vuitton

For those of you who have followed Paris Fashion Week until the very end, you’ve probably heard by now of Marc Jacobs’ departure from Louis Vuitton.  After 16-years as creative director at the fashion house, Jacobs will be leaving to work on his namesake line.  Although it’s obviously bittersweet when any designer leaves a brand, there’s no question that he went out with a bang.

I finally got a moment to sit down and watch the entire show up to and including his final bow and can attest that it was a happy finale of sorts.  Marc Jacobs couldn’t have gone out any other way.

The stage for his Spring 2014 collection paid tribute to some of Jacobs’ most memorable shows for the luxury brand.  While Jacobs may not have known it at the time, his last show for Louis Vuitton is without a doubt one for the history books.  Complete with the carousel, fountain, elevators and escalators from previous seasons, and we can’t forget the infamous hotel corridor from the Fall 2013 show, it was the perfect way to celebrate the culmination of Jacobs’ career at Louis Vuitton.

Despite all of the rumors about Jacobs leaving Louis Vuitton these past few months, he says that he and his business partner Robert Duffy basically decided on the morning of the show that it would be their last.  It was just a coincidence that the show (which seemed to be hinting at the end of an era) was as spectacular and grandiose as it was.  Rumor has it that Nicolas Ghesquiere may be next to fill the coveted shoes of creative director at LV (only time will tell…).

As for the inspiration behind the all-black, gothic-punk inspired clothes, Jacobs dedicated it to “the women who inspire me and to the show girl in every one of them.”
