Allow me to introduce you to the first of many of my “A Girl’s Guide to…” columns. Up first: a guide to one of my favorite areas to go out in Austin: the West 6th Street district.
The West 6th Street bar district includes The Ranch, Brew Exchange, Star Bar, Dogwood, Kung Fu Saloon (hereafter called Kung Fu), and Rio. These bars tend to attract people between the ages of 21 and 35 and, on most weekend nights, get insanely packed. If you’re able to reach the bartender before the bar fills up, most of the bars on West 6th have great house cocktails; I especially like the St. Ginger at Star Bar and the Sweet Dixie at Dogwood.
When I go out to bars, I have an awful tendency to barhop – often stopping at three or four places in a night. I usually start my nights at Kung Fu: a bar home to a plethora of games. The way I look at it, Kung Fu is a guaranteed good time: either you’re entertaining yourself with good company or you’re entertaining yourself with arcade games and Jenga. Star Bar and Dogwood also feature games: the former has Jenga and Cornhole in the backyard; the latter has two setups on the patio.
Now you’re mentally prepared for endless funtivities on the patio at Dogwood followed by dancing till the sun comes up (or it turns 2:00AM) upstairs at The Ranch…but what on earth shall you wear?

As much as I adore Austin, I’m also a fashion geek. I often lament that we always fall into the “laid back” category. Laid back is great (you should see what I wear to work!), but when it comes time to go out sometimes I just want to give it my all. That means sometimes you just have to be the girl in the crazy PVC paintbrush Moschino heels or the girl in the silk Pucci dress in a pizza restaurant… I get some odd looks from time to time, but it’s worth it!
