Anya Hindmarch: “Counter Culture” for AW14

I guess it’s true what they say about saving the best for last.  Despite being held on the final day of London Fashion Week,  Anya Hindmarch’s AW14 show was quite the crowd pleaser, and for good reason.  Appropriately titled “Counter Culture,” Hindmarch sent models strutting down the runway carrying handbags inspired by, of all things, the supermarket.  A retro Corn Flakes metal clutch, anyone?  Or how about a cobalt blue tote starring Tony the Tiger?

Hindmarch, who is progressively becoming known for her creative genius season after season, really set the benchmark high this go-around.  Her show was based at least in part on the concept of consumerism.  A barcode-inspired catwalk complete with moving conveyor belts served as a backdrop for the models as they made it to the end of the catwalk…actually, let’s make that the checkout line.

Although it’s easy to get caught up in the fun of Kellogg’s cereal and Daz detergent-inspired carryalls, the creative vision that Hindmarch exhibits speaks volumes.  Part runway, part Broadway with jazz-hands and upbeat music, the Anya Hindmarch AW14 show was for one and all.  Hindmarch shared with Daily Mail UK: “The supermarket conveyor belts are a playful take on those small unforeseen events that can change your life: a sliding doors moment and the luck of a chance encounter, passing someone in the airport for a moment or a door opening to reveal the unexpected.”

She further noted that the inspiration for the collection “began with the idea of finding beauty in the banal,” even in something as common and everyday as items on a grocery list.  Even better, she said, “It’s about celebrating the small things and seizing the moment to ‘get’ happy.”

It just goes to show that sometimes fashion need not always be so serious — and that’s exactly where Anya Hindmarch comes in with her uplifting presentation.  At the end of the day, fashion should be uplifting and make you smile.  For your viewing pleasure, here’s a snippet of the show (watch the entire presentation here).

Is it just me, or are you dying to get your hands on one of Anya Hindmarch’s signature Kellogg’s-inspired handbags?  I call dibs on the Coco Pops clutch!

From the floored and pleased-as-punch expressions of front row attendees like Olivia Palermo and Poppy Delevingne, I’d say that Hindmarch got it right.  Bravo.
