SPEAK OUT FOR HOPE WITH LAURA MERCIER

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, and Laura Mercier is dedicated to spreading awareness about the disease…and finding a cure.

Did you know that ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer death among American women? The American Cancer Society estimates that, in this year alone, 22,240 new cases of ovarian cancer will be diagnosed and 14,230 women will die from ovarian cancer in the United States.

The Laura Mercier Ovarian Cancer Fund

In 2012, Claudia Poccia, President and CEO of Gurwitch Products, and Laura Mercier, founder of makeup brand we have all come to love, bonded over their connections to ovarian cancer, a disease that profoundly affected both of them through the struggles of loved ones. Poccia lost her younger sister, Laura Lia Murray, to ovarian cancer at the age of 39. Mercier’s close friend Ranee Flynn has been fighting the disease for several years now.

To bring awareness to ovarian cancer and spread hope to the women who battle with the cancer, Poccia and Mercier, together with the help of their colleagues, launched the cosmetics brand’s corporate social responsibility platform: the Laura Mercier Ovarian Cancer Fund (LMOCF). LMOCF’s mission is to raise awareness, and fund research and educational efforts that will help diagnose, treat and support women with ovarian cancer.

So far, LMOCF has donated $200,000 to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center to help Memorial Sloan-Kettering’s physician-scientists act quickly on ovarian cancer research (for more information on these efforts, visit: www.mskcc.org/cancer-care/adult/ovarian). LMCOF has also partnered with Cancer and Careers, an initiative of the Cosmetic Executive Women Foundation. Cancer and Careers provides free publications, career coaching and support groups for working people with cancer (for more information on Cancer and Careers, visit: www.cancerandcareers.org).

I love when companies do things like this! Its wonderful to shop and know your money is going toward a social cause. M.A.C has a collection of VIVA GLAM lipsticks/lip-glosses and all the proceeds go to the M.A.C HIV/AIDS fund!
