Want to know a secret?
I have — gasp! — flat hair. There’s a lot of it, sure, but without chemical assistance . . . it falls as flat as overcooked spaghettini.
I’ve tried many techniques and products in my quest for voluminous, lush hair: blowdrying with my head upside-down; holding my hair up with a round brush, spraying hairspray on the roots and holding until it dries; backcombing; velcro rollers; and just about everything else out on the market. Thankfully, after years of searching, I found a product that actually works.
Flashback to 2009: I walked into the salon and requested my hairdresser give me a big sixties bang reminiscent to the ones that Zooey Deschanel and Katy Perry are sporting. My hairdresser advised against it, because of my cowlicks, but cut the bang anyway. During the post-cut styling process, she introduced me to a product that has given me the kind hair I always wanted: Big Sexy Hair’s Root Pump (or, as I like to call it, “bombshell in a bottle”).
It’s a spray-on, volumizing mousse formulated specifically to fatten up the roots of your hair, and it’s easy to use! Here’s how I do it:
1. When your hair is damp, lift the section (or sections) to which you want to give volume and spray Root Pump directly onto the roots of your hair. I, personally, find that holding the bottle at a distance that’s about half the length of the bottle itself from your hair works best.
2. While you’re blowdrying your hair, lift your hair up — either with your fingers, with a comb, or with a brush — aiming the air flow at your roots from underneath. The heat will set the mousse in place and give you great, lasting volume. For the Lemonettes — and Lemon Lads — who live in places with a humid climate, Root Pump’s sister, Root Pump Plus, is formulated to be humidity resistant!
3. Style further as needed, or leave your hair loose, and enjoy your day!
If flat hair is an issue for you, like it is for me, don’t give in to frustration. With a few styling tips and a bit of bombshell in a can, limp, flat hair will be a thing of the past.
