I don’t know about the rest of you, but with this latest round of snow (ick) I’ve started dreaming of tropical vacations where sipping drinks with little umbrellas all day long while sitting on the beach is an acceptable form of social interaction. Sun and rum; these things a tropical vacation make.
I may not be able to escape the snowy weather (but if you are one of the lucky few who can–take me, please!), but I can mix up some fun cocktails (though I don’t have any little umbrellas so I used some vintage cocktail stir sticks from Trader Vic’s) in the comfort of my own home where a blazing fire works as a passable substitute for the sun.
Black Mask Rum totally trumps any other spiced rum on the marketplace (this, of course, means that I have a bottle of everybody’s favorite Captain that is now relegated to the back of my liquor cabinet, fated to never see the light of day again). For me, the greatest thing about this rum is the vanilla notes, followed by the subtle notes of cinnamon and a bit of toffee. When combined, they make a wonderfully warm and cozy spirit that is perfect for mixing up some amazing drinks. When mixing up this drink, I found that I liked how the vanilla notes played off of the citrus notes, making the Spice Jamestown Sour reminiscent of an orangesicle (which is one of my all-time FAVORITE summer treats).
In addition to the Original Spiced, Black Mask also produces Island Coconut, Tropical Chai and Black Premo–and being the rum lover that I am, I cannot wait to try all of them!
