Wendy Davis to Run for Texas Governor

Wendy Davis made her long expected announcement last week that she will be running for the role of Texas Governor.

Speaking on the stage where she received her high school diploma more than 30 years ago, Davis promised to be an advocate for those who feel they no longer have a voice in the halls of the Texas State Capitol, as well as fighting for more education funding and taking on Texas Republicans who are in the pockets of their campaign contributors.

Davis is the first prominent Democrat to announce her candidacy for the race, and she faces a tough uphill climb in her quest to be elected. Texas is a tightly controlled conservative state, giving Mitt Romney more than 57% of the vote in the 2012 Presidential election. It elected Senator Ted Cruz to the US Senate, and it has a strong conservative base, fired up to oppose Davis and her platform. Davis will likely be facing Attorney General Greg Abbott, and individual with strong establishment allies and a campaign war chest of $20 million. A recent poll by the nonpartisan and nonprofit Texas Lyceum places Abbott leading Davis at 29% to 21%.

That said, Davis’s filibuster against abortion restrictions brought her countrywide recognition earlier this year, and she completed a successful fundraising circuit in Washington DC during the summer. Perhaps she can pull off the impossible?

This race for the Governor’s Mansion is certainly going to be one to watch, with history likely to be made if Davis can win election.

What are your thoughts on Davis’s announcement?
