Trim the tree — for less

Decorating for the holidays is one of my favorite traditions, but between twinkle lights, fresh wreaths, scented candles, and ceramic Santa figurines your pocketbook is probably straining from the Christmas cheer.  Here are some tips on how to make the most of your green.

Pick a theme!
Whether it’s a favorite color, decoration, or character I think every tree should have a theme.  This makes it easier to choose ornaments and other additions that will complement each other for years to come. Go ahead, get creative with it.

Add some lights
It all starts with lights.  Whether you prefer traditional white or an array of colors, make sure you have enough lights to complete the tree.  Don’t forget to plug them in and check before you start!  To magnify the effect, try adding some mirrored ornaments or green glass ornaments to the middle of the tree.  This reflects the lights and makes the tree look fuller without the hassle.

String up garland
The options for garland are endless, from fancy ribbons and beads to homemade popcorn and paper chains.  Adding garland around the tree can help fill space and cut down on the ornaments you need to complete the look.

Choose your ornaments
Classic glass balls are always a must, but can be expensive (especially if you drop a few!).  Try making your own snowflakes, glitter pinecones, or other ornaments, or adding candy canes, bows or other inexpensive items to round out the décor.

Top it off!
Don’t forget to add a topper!  Stars and angels are a holiday staple, but a large bow can look just as nice for a much lower price. Also, a large piece of fabric, like leftover burlap, can serve as a perfect little tree skirt.

Happy decorating!
