The box subscription addiction: let’s break it down

SLBoxes

Getting a box full of surprises is a great present in a crazy busy, now-professional life. So it’s no surprise that subscription boxes are the cool new thing. A lot of companies have jumped on the bandwagon and offer boxes that can range from beauty products to exercise tools — but which ones are worth it?

  1. One of the most popular boxes is Birch Box ($10).  While one of the less expensive boxes, you get what you pay for.  Some months can be hit-or-miss.  BB claims to give you “deluxe” samples, but sometimes you may end up with some foil packet samples a la magazines or free-with-Sephora purchases.
  2. Ipsy ($10) is also a beauty subscription service. Instead of coming in a box, it is all packaged inside a different makeup bag each month.  The samples have been known to be a tad bigger than the Birch Box samples, but can also have some “miss” months with lots of foil packets.
  3. Julep Maven ($20) is the box for nail polish lovers! Each month is a different collection of their nail polishes and some of their nail treatments.  The higher price is worth it if you are really into nail polish and nail care.  A single bottle retails for $14, so getting a couple each month for $20 seems to be a deal.  If you are fond of only a certain shade of polish though, this box may not be for you.
  4. Glossy Box ($21) is a more expensive box that guarantees larger samples.  It offers deluxe—and adorable—packaging of high end beauty products.  I find Glossybox to be a bit theme-y, while I am someone who likes variety.  There are also a lot of companies that you may have not heard of that come in the Glossybox, so this is the box for you if you want to learn about different companies.
  5. PopSugar ($35) is definitely a different type of box.  While the price point is much higher, there is way more to this box than just beauty products—it is more of a lifestyle box.  In each box, you can expect a beauty, home, food, health, and fashion product.  Each box certainly varies in content, and sometimes the products in each category are not really what you would expect.

These are just a few of the many subscription services out there.  If you are unsure about what you want to spend your hard-earned money on, do your research—on YouTube! Search “unboxing” on YouTube, and you will find all the subscription services you could ever imagine.

What’d we miss? Any box subscriptions you swear by?

There a more recent box subscription, Boxycharm! I think it came out this past spring. It’s around $20 and is all full sized products that can be found in your typical drug store! Things I’ve seen are essie nail polish, Almay eye shadow, Rimmel products!
