Better with Age

One of my biggest pet peeves is forgetting someone’s birthday. If you ask me any of my good friends’ or family members’ birthdays, I could tell you without any hesitation.

Better with Age
Growing up, I loved celebrating birthdays, and of course, going to birthday parties. For my own big day, I always chose vanilla cake, pink balloons and a theme (often Disney Princess or Mary-Kate & Ashley inspired). From skating rinks to sleepovers, and just about everything in between, every birthday was memorable.

Fast forward a few years and not much has changed. I still love celebrating friends’ birthdays with dinners, brunches and parties. This includes sending birthday cards via snail mail and picking up the phone on someone’s special day (because that’s so much more personal than a Facebook post!).

Last year, I managed to pull off a surprise dinner party for my best friend and roommate and this past year, I was blessed to have the best 25th birthday party with the help of my close friends as hostesses. I will start this story off by saying that I wanted to do something “low key”, which, if you know me, normally ends up being the farthest from the truth once the actual planning begins. We came up with the idea of a “Wine Tasting Party” complete with blind tastings, appetizers, sweets, custom cups & favors. Oh yes and this was limited to an all-girls guest list.

Having an April birthday is always a gamble with the weather in DC, but it turned out to be perfect and guests each brought their favorite bottle of wine to share. Spring sundresses were out in full force and the cake (which served as breakfast the next morning) was a hit! My sorority sisters surprised me with the most adorable cake I’ve ever had (only took 25 years!) from , a local bakery in Richmond, Virginia.

I’ll be the first to admit that the thought of turning “Twenty Five” terrified me. I dreaded it for months and often still claim to be 24 but having such a wonderful celebration with my closest friends made it that much easier. I wasn’t even upset when I had 26 candles to blow out on my cake (one EXTRA for good luck!).

What do you do to celebrate birthdays?
