Qigong: A Chinese Yoga

Sunset Yoga with Reflection“Qigong is the most profound health practice ever invented by mankind for the prevention of illness, reducing stress, managing chronic conditions, increasing longevity, and promoting healthy, active aging.”

- Tom Rogers, President, Qigong Institute

After seeing a yoga class called Qigong offered at my graduate school’s Faith Center, I decided to give it try. I had never heard of it before, but that didn’t stop me (let’s be honest – I’ve never really met a yoga I didn’t like). The class turned out to be more of a mind-body connection type of exercise rather than a workout, as we moved through a series of movements that brought a sense of flow and relaxation (think: moving meditation). We didn’t even need a mat, as everything was done standing up. Best part: you can wear whatever…workout gear or work clothes. It’s a “come as you are” practice with very low impact moves. It’s actually very similar to Tai Chi, which you can learn a little more about here. And be sure to check out the video on my previous Bodyflow review to see some Tai Chi in action.

So, what exactly is Qigong? Upon returning from class, I was looking to learn all I could. According to Qigong Healing Arts, “There are many ways to describe this ancient tradition from China. Qigong includes exercises, meditation and energy manipulation methods which were developed from Taoist and Buddhist martial and spiritual traditions in China.”

Here’s a video preview to give you more of an idea of what Qigong entails -

Some quick facts:
-Qigong is used for healing and fitness, and can improve spirituality and health

-Its methods may help you gain power, energy, endurance, and flexibility

-It is still an essential aspect of the Chinese medical system today

Be sure to try a Qigong class – it could be exactly what you’re looking for to complete your mind body health regime. Try out any type of fitness class for that matter, even if you’ve never heard of it; it could be your next favorite!
