Sticking to a workout routine can seem hard when you’re traveling, or even annoying because you’re on vacation! Who wants to workout when you get a little time off from the real world? But it can actually be pretty easy and fun if you think about it in a simpler way.
If you’re making a big move, it can be those comforts of routine (like exercise) that really make you feel more at home. When I first got to Spain last September, it was a huge adjustment; from learning my way around a new city, to having to communicate in Spanish..it wasn’t always easy. I knew I needed my normal routines and comforts to start this new life for myself and keep grounded, like eating healthy, exercising regularly, and making time for my spiritual practices.
As far as exercise goes, I needed to figure out a workout routine on a tighter budget and make time to do it between work, getting my life established and weekend traveling. Keep reading for my tips and tricks to feeling good, balanced and energized for the traveler.
1. Explore the new place you’re in! Walk everywhere even if public transit is available. Choose to walk sometimes instead. Or, take a route you know is longer to take in your new, beautiful surroundings. Just wander! Find a bridge, park or river to walk or run along. Take the stairs when commuting or in your apartment. Find a walking tour of your city (which are usually free or pretty cheap), check out some local hikes or go rowing on a lake.
2. Look for free workout classes. I know Lululemon offers yoga classes on the weekends in certain cities (just had an amazing class when visiting my sister in Georgetown, DC). Most of the time, you can find free first time classes or specials at yoga studios or gyms. I was lucky enough to have a Bikram Yoga studio across the street from my apartment in Madrid, and got a week unlimited for only 15 euro. They also offered English classes but I forced myself to take the Spainish ones to learn the language. Why not work out your brain and body at the same time?
3. DVDs are a great tool for staying fit in the comfort of your hotel or apartment. Pop it in your computer, no internet necessary. Don’t forget to pack these before your trip or just download from Amazon to your computer to save room in your suitcase! This is probably the most flexible form of exercise while on the go because you can use them on your own time, for however long you want. A few of my favorites include , , and . You can even check out online fitness sites like for instant videos! .
When you’re short on time and simply don’t feel like using technology, try some sun salutations to get you moving. Or, 25 jumping jacks, push ups, sit ups, etc. Anything you want to get energized! Even just taking a long stretch is better than nothing and will make you feel so much better.
Next time you’re planning a trip or making a big move, keep these tips in mind and never leave home without fitness!
