I Scream (You Scream) for a SPIDER!

I don’t know if you felt it over the weekend, but there was a subtle shift in the air. Summer is coming to a rapid close. The kiddos are on their way back to school, students are invading college campuses – and the biggest sign: pools have started preparing for their end-of-summer blowouts. Autumn is coming, my dear friends, and I’m not sure I’m ready for it.

Over the weekend, determined to make the most of the (thankfully) sunny weather in the Midwest,  I decided to indulge in one of summer’s most simple pleasures: the root beer float. Sitting on the back deck, soaking up the sun and listening to the sounds of summer while slurping down my float was the ultimate summer experience; it’s the simple things in life that make the world go round. Did you know: in Australia and New Zealand soda floats are known as a spider? Yea. Me, neither. And can I just ask – why?

A word about floats (or spiders): you can make them with basically anything you want, I chose root beer – mainly because of the nostalgic feeling of summers long past. Root beer not your thing? Try a Brown Cow (Coke with vanilla ice cream), or a Snow White (Sprite/7-Up with vanilla ice cream), or how does a Guinness Ice Cream Float sound? The possibilities are ENDLESS! And to bastardize one of the all time great movie lines: .SweetLemonMag-RootBeerFloat

Soda Floats / Spider

Ingredients:

Soda of choice
Vanilla ice cream / vanilla frozen yogurt
Straw
Spoon
Tall Glass

Directions:

Place two scoops of ice cream in the bottom of your glass. FYI: you might want to put the glass on a plate or tray to catch any of the possible fizz-over that could occur.

Slowly pour soda over ice cream – it will be SUPER fizzy. You won’t be able to add all the root beer at once (or you could but watch-out it could be messy!).

Once you’re happy with your soda / ice cream ratio (I used half a bottle of root beer to two scoops of frozen yogurt), grab your straw and spoon and go to town!
