Now more than ever, advertisements in fashion magazines are more prevalent than original content and editorial spreads. Sometimes finding the table of contents seems impossible because all of the actual pages are lost in a sea of branding.
For this reason, I prefer creative designer-focused videos to print ads. Usually they consist of a talented — sometimes unexpected — cast, a brilliant director, and copious amounts of beautiful clothing. Luckily, thanks to recent collaborations of brilliant people, fashion short films have become a whole new art medium just begging to be watched and admired. Check out these recent and upcoming films, and share your own favorites in the comments below.
“Castello Cavalcanti”
Renowned director Wes Anderson, of Moonrise Kingdom and The Royal Tenenbaums fame, turned his lens on fashion when he directed this short film for Prada. The film stars Jason Schwartzman, an Anderson favorite, who plays an Italian racecar driver. Enough said.
Salvatore Ferragamo tapped Skins’ actress Kaya Scodelario for his lighthearted mini series called Walking Stories. It follows Scodelario as she navigates cities and boys, not without a quirky soundtrack and beautiful backdrops of Los Angeles, Shanghai, and Florence.
The latest film about fashion legend Coco Chanel, set to debut December 10 before Karl Lagerfeld’s Paris-Dallas Métiers d’Art collection, focuses on Chanel’s poorly received post-war comeback in 1954. Lagerfeld stayed true to the legend with a talented and genuine cast, including Geraldine Chaplin, Chanel muse Amanda Harlech, and a few of his own seamstresses.
