As a mid-twenties something, balancing work, a social life, family, and your health can be extremely challenging. We are always on the go, and our personal needs are generally the first thing to get pushed to the wayside. When talking amongst my girlfriends, one thing I constantly hear them fret about is the lack of time they have to prepare healthy snacks. As a result, they become famished by lunchtime, end up selecting the most unhealthy option, and, as they unbutton their work slacks once back at their desk, feel full of regret.
Lucky for them (and you!), I have pulled together 8 nutritious, easy snack ideas that will keep you satisfied during that oh-so-boring Webinar or as you scramble to make that last minute report deadline. Instead of reaching for the donuts, opt for one of the below:
- Apple with peanut butter. This classic snack never gets old. Top a crispy apple with some reduced fat crunchy peanut butter for a filling treat.
- Almonds mixed with raisins. This is so simple and nourishing. Just pick up the items during your weekly grocery store trip and separate amounts into plastic baggies; you’re set for the whole week!
- Fresh berries with Greek yogurt. Choose nonfat plain Greek yogurt (flavored yogurts are usually full of sugar), and add some strawberries or blueberries. Chobani nonfat plain Greek yogurt is my go-to. Yum!
- Frozen grapes. Just make sure you have a freezer at work to store them in. You’ll be amazed by how long these cold treats last while snacking.
- Turkey jerky. I used to hate jerky, but recently developed an affinity for it. Turkey jerky is delicious and provides lots of protein, but just be careful not to overdo it, as jerky is packed with sodium.
- Carrots and hummus. Spice this up with different hummus flavors. There are so many unique varieties available, such as edamame, roasted red pepper, and artichoke. You can never go wrong with Sabra Supremely Spicy Hummus.
- Cheese sticks or slices. Extra sharp, 2% milk Kraft Cracker Barrel Cheese Sticks are my favorite.
- Breakfast or snack bar. One thing to keep in mind when selecting a bar is the fat and sugar content. Sometimes they are just like an ice cream sundae in disguise. I can’t get enough of Raw Crunch Bars in the chocolate flavor.
