As I gaze upon my sister’s ever expanding collection of polish, brushes and tools, I can’t help but feel vaguely overshadowed by her carefully trimmed cuticles and status of Instagram celebrity. Nail polish, as an artistic medium, has gained insurmountable popularity on social media platforms such as Tumblr and Instagram with hundreds of different accounts dedicated solely to the practice. And naturally, a #nailporn hashtag has been born.
My sister’s own account, , attracts nearly 5,000 followers. She has become prolific in a medium that transcends social media for being accessible, profoundly creative, and fun. Hundreds of likes on a daily basis justify and promote her hobby and I can’t help but show her work off to people of all ages. I am aware that this may come off as a relentless plug for her work, what I am really trying to promote here is her diligence and creativity. While I must admit that I have never been one to get creative with my nails– I regrettably find myself rocking a more stylistically “shabby-chic/chipped look” — I love that she has learned to consistently practice something she loves to do. And this truth has become a bit of an inspiration for me. She continues to create a visual display of time that literally exists on her hands.
So no matter who you are or what you like to do, I invite you to think of the endless possibly for diligence and creativity to be integrated into your own life. Work with what you’ve got and do something today that you can be proud of!
