Five & Five: Five Fall Nail Polish Trends From “5 Free” Brands

It is almost September and fall is on its way, which means time to change up not only your clothes and shoes, but your nail polishes for the season. For Fall/Winter 2013 it is all about deep, rich tones; cool and warm neutrals; and metallic. Another trend in nail polish, which I am sure we will all be grateful for, is the use of less toxic formulas. Over the past couple of years, we have seen numerous brands come out with “3 Free” formulas.

A lacquer that is “3 Free” means that it does not include: formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and toluene or what has been referred to as the “Toxic Trio.” However, more recently nail polish brands have become “5 Free,” which means that they additionally do not include formaldehyde resin and camphor. Brands such as Scotch Naturals and Acquarella, water based nail polish brands, have even gone toxin free!

All of the nail polishes featured below for the trends of the season are “5-Free,” so be sure to check them out when picking your polishes this season. Don’t forget you can always bring your own polish to the nail salon!

Oxblood Red

A deep, rich red nail color was all over the runways for fall. Tibi, Zac Posen, Jill Stuart,  Naeem Khan, Wes Gordon, Burberry and Rachel Roy were just a few of the collections to feature this shade on the models fingers. Oxblood red is amazing for fall, as it has a classic feel with a bit of a dark, romantic edge. The JINsoon polish featured above is one of the five shades developed in their collaboration with women’s wear designer Amy Smilovic of Tibi for the Fall/Winter 2013 collection.

Teal

It’s all about teal this fall.  A color that was prominent in clothing for the season seen at shows such as Milly, Oscar de la Renta, Elie Saab, Narciso Rodriguez, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Felipe Oliveira Baptista can also be incorporated into your look on your nails. ”5-Free” polish brands such as Scotch Naturals, Zoya and Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics have come out with the perfect shades of teal to transition from typing in the office to a night out on the town.

Metallic

Accessorize your look this season with silver and chrome on your nails. Metallic nails made a strong statement this season at Rebecca Minkoff, Costello Tagliapietra, Nicole Miller, Monique Lhuillier, and Joanna Mastroianni. However, you don’t always have to stick to the classic silver. Brands such as Mineral Fusion, ncLA and Rescue Beauty Lounge have come out with metallic and chrome polishes with a hint of color that add an unexpected element to your finger tips.

Cool & Warm Neutrals

A neutral is chic in any season, but for those who shy away from the stronger fall color trends a cool gray or warm brown is the perfect alternative. It packs more punch than your traditional nude, but remains sophisticated.

Emerald

Emerald was Pantone’s color of the year and it is definitely making its mark in nail polishes for fall. A statement shade that goes great with all of your fall neutrals, it will add a pop of color whether it is a matte finish or has a hint of sparkle.
