For this week’s playlist, I gathered a mix of Christmas pop songs varying from pop songs of the Motown-era all the way through to the popular Christmas music of the last few years. These are the songs that can drive you up the wall, the songs that you swear you won’t listen to one more time. These are also the songs you find yourself turning the volume up on when you have an “ok, just ONE more time” moment.
We have all heard them, and we all love them. From Mariah Carey belting “All I Want For Christmas Is You” to little Michael Jackson breaking it down with The Jackson 5, these holiday-themed pop songs are popular for a reason… they’re just too much fun.
Drummer Boy – Justin Bieber, Busta Rhymes
This is by far my least favorite holiday song, but the Biebs turned it around for me. Something about the way he breaks it down and puts a twist on the boring, monotonous original is so enticing. I always want to switch it when this one comes on, but then I remind myself that Bieber does this song justice.
Go Tell It On The Mountain – Simon & Garfunkel
This is definitely my favorite Christmas song performed at church, and has been since I was little. To have Simon & Garfunkel, two of the most genius folk artists of all, sing a folk-like Christmas song is incredible. The combination is unbeatable.
Happy Xmas (War Is Over) – John & Yoko and the Plastic Ono Band with The Harlem Community Choir
Any words that I could write here would not give due justice to Mr. John Lennon. John Lennon and a choir. It gives me chills. I will leave it at that.
While there is nothing overly exciting or new to this mix, it’s a good one to put on in the background if you and your roomies decide to host a tacky sweater party. I can almost guarantee there will be at least one song that everybody knows and loves *cough* Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays *cough*.
