Game Day Do’s & Dont’s

Game Day Do's & Don'ts

Freshman year of college or seasoned veteran?

As an alumna of a “football school”, I love the excitement of fall weather & football season each year. Weekends revolve around kickoff time, rivalries, and tailgates, tailgates, tailgates! Whether you’re still an undergrad, newly graduated, a seasoned pro, or just jumping on your beau’s favorite team’s bandwagon, here are some basic do’s and don’ts for Game Days.

Do:
  • Dress in spirit. Get creative with school colors. (I went to a university with a less than favorable palate of colors- sorry, Virginia Tech, orange and maroon?) Yet, somehow week after week, my sorority sisters and I  put together a “Game Day outfit” from sundresses to jeans & boots. No outfit is complete without your favorite Greek/team button or two. One word of caution, earlier in the season, do be mindful of tanlines & use proper sun protection!
  • Take pictures. (Like I even have to say this in the day and age of Instagram?) Some of my favorite collegiate memories come in the forms of photos and thanks to Facebook, they’re easy to find. But really, whether you’re an alum or student, framed Game Day pics never go out of style and get you excited year round for the next season to begin.
  • Come prepared. Where I went to school, this meant preparing for ALL types of weather. August game? Sunnies – check! November game? Rain jacket/Fleece – check! Any time of the season? - purse & koozie – check! check!
  • Celebrate! Win or lose, a night out post Game Day is unlike anything else and plus, it keeps the tailgate going (still, settle down, don’t be “that girl” – please refer to below).
Don’t:
  • Show up empty handed. If you’re a coed, you can probably bend this rule and make an appearance at just about any fraternity house welcomed and wanted, but if you’re attending a fellow alum’s tailgate or even a remote Game Day party, there’s no reason you can’t whip up a great dip or contribute to the alcohol menu in some fashion. Need the perfect festive cooler? My favorite is from Scout – it comes in a variety of colors and patterns.
  • Be a sore loser. Nothing screams unattractive like a lady with a sailor mouth. Keep it to yourself, I promise in just 7 more days, you’ll be over the loss and ready to do it all over again.
  • Don’t be “that girl”. Yes, you know the girl. The one who starts drinking at 7:30am for a NOON game and doesn’t quite make it to the main event. It’s a marathon, so pace yourself, eat up, and enjoy the day!

There you have it! My top tips for tailgating like a pro: looking great while doing it and being a good sport. Read, rest & repeat. It’s only September…

Go Hokies!!!! We’re a Hokie family here and while I’d admit..I’m not a HUGE fan of the colors…you can play with it a bit!

I love your point about not being “that girl”…
