#Sharknado: A look back

There are two types of people in this world: those who watch Shark Week and those who are scared of seaweed.  For those of us who identify with the latter, welcome to your worst nightmare: Sharknado.

#Sharknado was the talk of the Twitter town last night as Syfy premiered this made for TV summer classic. The premiere garnered 1.369 million views Thursday night, and about 5,000 tweets per minute about the movie. Director Anthony C. Ferrante told  how bewildered he was that it received this much attention and chatter.  Well, Tony, so are we. Then again, with all the bickering on immigration, farm bills (sans food stamps), and student loans in Washington, I guess we can’t blame journalists for wanting to have a little fun.

These same journalists and creative minds are putting on their thinking caps and asking the crucial follow up question: what’s next? Ezra Klein and the wonks over at WaPo’s Wonkblog are on it, listing possible Sharknado sequels (our favorites so far are Shih Tzunami, Ottergedon, and Hippocaplyse) while Time’s James Poniewozik made a snap return from vacation when he felt the journalistic call to duty to discuss and review the SyFy movie. ”This exquisitely ridiculous Syfy movie was the most delicious social-media chum,” he wrote, ”and we are merely creatures of instinct.” Too true.

So what’d you miss? Basically this:

Oh, and sharp, quick screen writing that harkens back to the West Wing days. You know, the later seasons after Sorkin left. Thank you, Vine.

And since half the fun was the social media action that went along with the movie, we’ve compiled some of our favorite tweets for you. Because the great thing about technology is you can still act like experienced it — even if it’s not in real time. Now enjoy Twitter’s Sharknado as many times as you want.
